LKG vs UKG: What Changes Between PP1 and PP2?
LKG and UKG are the two kindergarten stages before primary school. LKG is also commonly called PP1 or Junior KG; UKG may be called PP2 or Senior KG. LKG introduces a more sustained early-learning rhythm, while UKG helps children consolidate language, early reading and writing, number understanding, independence, and the routines needed for the move toward Grade 1.

What children are building in LKG/PP1
LKG is a bridge between the more exploratory Nursery years and a growing capacity for sustained work. Children are often ready for longer conversations, more detailed stories, early sound and symbol work, sorting and quantity activities, and projects that unfold over more than one step.
The strongest early-years learning remains concrete. A child can move objects while counting, build hand strength before being expected to write for long periods, hear and play with sounds before decoding print, and describe what they have made.

UKG helps children become more confident with the foundations they will use in primary school. Readiness is more than the alphabet
Knowing letters or numbers does not tell the whole story. Consider whether your child can communicate needs, listen during a short group moment, return to a task, try again after difficulty, take part in simple routines, and relate to other children.
NCERT’s Vidya Pravesh module for Grade 1 readiness includes getting along with other children, following routines, adjusting to a new environment, concentrating, and developing foundational literacy and numeracy through play-based experiences. That is a useful reminder that readiness is social, emotional, physical, linguistic, and cognitive—not only academic.

- How much time is spent with real materials, stories, movement, and conversation?
- How does the school support a child who is strong in one area and still developing in another?
- What does the transition from UKG to Grade 1 look like?

Avoid turning UKG into an entrance-exam year
It is natural to want your child prepared for Grade 1. But preparation should build confidence and understanding, not fear of mistakes. Look for a classroom where children can manipulate quantities before writing number sentences, talk about a story before answering questions, and develop control before being asked to fill pages.
